This Weekend at The Music Center

Happy Friday friends!  This weekend we’ve got a very cool assortment of shows, including Music Center debuts and opening nights!  You won’t want to miss a thing this weekend at The Music Center…

Tonight

Catch the 1st of 3 performances of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan in our Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.  Known as Taiwan’s premiere contemporary dance company, Cloud Gate blends a unique and mesmerizing style influenced by Tai-Chi, martial arts and modern dance.  Their production, Rice, tells the cyclical story of the staple crop, set against a backdrop of stunning photography from the region.

Meanwhile in Walt Disney Concert Hall, Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the LA Phil in a program of Beethoven and Mahler.  And in the CalArts REDCAT theatre, check out Meg Wolfe’s new lushly physical movement work: New Faithful Disco , for a very different kind of dance show!

Saturday

Along with additional performances of Cloud Gate Dance, Beethoven and Mahler, and  New Faithful Disco, treat yourself to the opening night of Center Theatre Group’s hilarious new engagement of  An Act of God, starring Sean Hayes in our Ahmanson Theatre.   Plus, the Los Angeles Master Chorale will be performing a matinee of Verdi’s Requiem in the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Looking for something for the kiddos?  Take them to the latest performance in the LA Phil’s mid-morning series, Toyota’s Symphonies for Youth, at 11 am in the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and enjoy a short performance of Debussy’s La Mer.

It’s the final day to see Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, as well as additional performance of Beethoven and Mahler, Verdi’s Requiem, and  An Act of God.

Center Theatre Group presents Immediate Family  at the Mark Taper Forum, directed by Tony Award® winner Phylicia Rashad!

LA Phil presents Beethoven & Strauss with pianist Lise de la Salle signing CDs at the lobby entrance to the LA Phil store pre-show. During the day on Saturday bring the little ones for Toyota Symphonies for Youth: Peter and the Wolf and enjoy pre-show interactive art workshops. On Sunday night don’t miss your opportunity to see five-time Grammy-winning singer/ songwriter Michael McDonald. On Tuesday catch Chamber Music Society: Brahms with Bronfman with a pre-show wine tasting!

REDCAT is in the throes of festivals this week with the CalArts Film/Video Showcases, the REDCAT International Children’s Film Festival, Dance Camera West, and Hou Hsiao-Hsien: Flowers of Shanghai.

One might find this to be a confusing weekend to make plans. It’s a three day weekend in celebration of our Presidents, we’ve got a Friday the 13th, and then a sentimental Valentine’s Day thrown in just to keep it all interesting. Let us help with some phenomenal programming that can accommodate all the above and more!

LA Opera continues its run of The Ghosts of Versailles, the opera within an opera, with a Sunday matinee. Have you happened to check out Los Angeles magazine’s photo essay of the production’s stunning costumes?

Center Theatre Group opened the provocative and classic drama The Price at the Mark Taper Forum this week, which runs through March 22. Alternatively Dame Edna’s Glorious Goodbye The Farewell Tour at the Ahmanson Theatre continues with more and more raving reviews of hilarity!

LA Phil presents three opportunities to see Martha Argerich Plays Schumann, including pieces by Britten, Schumann, and Strauss. Tonight, enjoy the multi-faceted jazz evening Terri Lyne Carrington’s Mosaic Project, featuring $20 tickets. And in case you missed it last Saturday, find yourself and your little ones immersed in Toyota Symphonies for Youth: Bolero: Ravel’s Dance for Orchestra this Saturday. All at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

REDCAT presents a not-to-be-missed split screen set for Mariano Pensotti: Cineastas, which conceptually weaves together life and art in this “filmic drama.” Opens tomorrow night and runs through next week, so you can still have another opportunity to catch it in case your three day weekend suddenly slips by!
