4 Ways to Celebrate Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year officially begins tonight at midnight, and to help welcome in the year of the Sheep (or Goat or Ram- it really is debatable!) we thought we’d share 4 ways we will be celebrating in line with the traditions of the Lunar New Year.

1. Red Decorations!

Wearing red and decorating your space with red is good luck. Well fancy that! We just updated our plaza furniture to predominantly red with touches of purple. Coincidence?

2. Red Envelopes!

Usually given to children and containing money, Red Envelopes at Chinese New Year are believed to provide health, happiness and protection.  Our resident company the LA Phil is throwing a huge Chinese New Year celebration production at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Thursday through Saturday. Customary red envelope gifts for everybody (and so much more) are scheduled to be part of every performance of Chinese New Year: From Tchaikovsky to Tan Dun!

3. New Year’s Eve Dinner!

Dumplings and fish are believed to signify prosperity, and the NYE dinner traditionally takes place at home. However, our resident Patina Restaurant Group has prepared a special six-course good luck tasting menu being served Thursday through Sunday. Post your favorite dish on Instagram tagged with #PatinaLuckyDishes for the chance to receive a $500 PRG Dining Card!   Hey, winning that card might also signify prosperity and luck!

4. Fireworks!

Right after midnight, fireworks will be set off to welcome in the new year. As in midnight tonight! If you have yet to experience the fireworks and parade (celebrating it’s 116th year!) that accompany the holiday, then check out L.A. Chinatown’s schedule of events over the next few days. After all, we’re just a hop, skip, and a jump away from ground zero of the local festivities which begin at 11:00 pm tonight!
