BalletBoyz Behind the Scenes

If you were among the lucky folks to see BalletBoyz perform this weekend at The Music Center, you probably already understand why we were sad to see them off after their final performance on Sunday.  Not only were they amazing dancers, with technical precision and incredible fluidity, but they were also totally warm, friendly and fun.  Besides completely wow-ing Los Angeles audiences all weekend, the Boyz also found the time to do a bit of sight-seeing, make a myriad of appearances and even teach some master classes.  Here’s a peek at a few of our favorite behind the scenes moments from the weekend….

BalletBoyz is one of the most cheekily original and innovative forces in modern dance and has thrilled audiences and critics the world over with its distinctive style marked by muscularity, ferocity, as well as tremendous grace and elegance. The Guardian describes it as “a paradox of muscular impact and weightless flight.”

We can hardly believe that it’s officially November!  That means we’re just about a month away from our big 50th Anniversary Celebrations, and we’re less than a week from opening night of BalletBoyz on November 7th!  It also means that today registrations opens today for our annual Holiday Ukulele Orchestra – That’s right, sign up and get ready to play all your holiday favorites on your uke!

But perhaps the main attraction of the moment is the holiday of the day – Dia De Los Muertos!  Our friends from Lore Productions have installed a series of glorious alters and pavement art on our plaza for a stunning display, perfect for the occasion.  Head over to take a look and then stroll into Grand Park for all kinds of Dia De Los Muertos festivities including face-painting, food, great bands, live dance performances and more community-made alters!

The fun starts at 3pm.  See ya there!  Oh, and Happy November LA!

BalletBoyz: The Next Generation

We’ve been doing a lot of thinking over here about what it takes to be a male dancer.  With our upcoming performances from all-male dance company BalletBoyz in the Ahmanson Theatre November 7-9th, we’ve been shifting our focus onto all the amazing men in dance – past and present.  Of course, we have our favorites, Baryshnikov, Ángel Corella, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Jacques d’Amboise… The list goes on and on.

But the cheekily innovative BalletBoyz brings a whole new generation of male dancers to the forefront of the dance world – all proving with each performance that real men, totally wear tights!
